The iPhone 16 Pro Max has been out for just a few days, and JerryRigEverything’s Zack Nelson has already put it through his rigorous durability test.
Published on Saturday, the test has garnered over two million views, indicating a high level of interest in how Apple’s latest, largest, and most expensive iPhone withstands various forms of abuse, including scratching, burning, and bending.
Watching Nelson drag a box cutter blade across the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tough, but it provides valuable insight into the durability of its glass and frame. Despite Apple’s claim that this year's Ceramic Shield display is 50% tougher than the original and twice as strong as glass on other smartphones, Nelson found it relatively easy to scratch with his tools.
In typical fashion, Nelson injects some witty commentary during the test. He remarked on the alignment of the rear camera lenses, joking, “The cameras are lined up to film in spatial video for the three people who own Vision Pros.” He also pointed out that while filming at 120 frames per second in 4K is impressive, Samsung had already achieved it with their S24 Ultra, quipping, “You know how it is over at Apple—yesterday’s tech for tomorrow’s prices.”
As part of the test, Nelson held a flame to the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s display. Impressively, after more than 10 seconds of exposure, the screen showed no visible damage, though he cautioned viewers not to try this at home.
After last year’s surprising bend test with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, where the back glass shattered on the first bend, many are eager to see how the iPhone 16 Pro Max holds up. To find out if it survives, you’ll have to watch the video!
